Alun Jones is a highly experienced senior property solicitor who brought over 25 years of experience gained in a range of firms, including Hogan Lovells and Lawrence Graham, to Everyman Legal.
“I was at a crossroads in my career: there was a recession, I’d just celebrated my fiftieth birthday and my fifth child was imminent.
It was the recruiters Taylor Root who approached me about working with Everyman Legal. I’d heard about the concept of so-called ‘virtual’ law firms from a magazine article I’d read and subsequently filed a year or so previously. But as soon as I heard more I realised that the flexibility and opportunities offered could help me create a work/life balance which would enable me to continue providing an excellent service to my clients and also accommodate all my commitments, at home and in my church and charity work .
Now, after two and half years with the firm, I feel I have a greater connection with both my work and my family. The responsibility to make things happen and earn is mine and mine alone. This is akin to running my own business, but with much greater support than many business owners often enjoy.
As well as specialising in property, I have a great deal of experience in private client work, so I am developing a practice encompassing both. The Everyman Legal website is providing a steady stream of new business enquiries, while Everyman solicitors all share contacts and collective experiences, which has helped generate instructions.
The efficient, helpful and cheerful administrative assistance provided to all Everyman solicitors has also been invaluable; it frees me up to get on with the client-facing side of the practice. While we may be physically separated by many miles, there is still a real team spirit and we have team meetings too on a fairly regular basis.
Proximity to my family is also stronger. I am able to move in and out of work mode quickly and flexibly; and am no longer plagued by the constant worry that many parents feel about leaving the office in time for an important family commitment.
