Former Slaughter and May and Eversheds solicitor Jocelyn Taylor is 100% happier in her work since moving to Everyman Legal.
“I’d certainly heard about the concept of ‘virtual’ law firms and when I decided to research my next move, joining such a firm seemed like a natural fit.
At the point of joining Everyman, I was also talking to another ‘virtual’ firm but I always think that you know straight away if you’re comfortable with a firm and its culture, and based on what I saw and heard from Everyman, I quickly make the decision to join.
Since starting work with the firm, I have experienced far greater freedom than I have ever before enjoyed in the workplace.
One of the most refreshing things has been breaking free of the seemingly endless tick-box administrative procedures adopted by many larger firms. These procedures are rarely focused on providing the best solution for clients and can be a complete time drain. It is the complete opposite at Everyman: pretty much all of my time is spent on clients and virtually none on administration. As and when I do need administrative help, the excellent team in the firm’s Witney office is always on hand.
There isn’t a set pattern to the work and I like that. Some days I work and some days I don’t – it is all driven by my clients, many of whom I have worked with for over 20 years and have followed me to Everyman.
I only see my colleagues a handful of times throughout the year but one of the big surprises has been how everyone in the firm genuinely gets on. I put this down to us all being at similar stages in our lives, having confidence in what we do and knowing that we’re not in competition with one another. I really look forward to our gatherings in Witney and I’ve not always been able to say that about previous firm gatherings I’ve had to attend!
Working as part of a firm like Everyman will not suit those at the beginning of their career, those with a new client following or a general practitioner, but if you’re an experienced niche practitioner then I would say it’s a no-brainer to join a firm like Everyman Legal. Not only can you can stand alone and benefit from being part of a national network, you will receive far greater reward for your work.
For solicitors considering a move but worried about becoming self-employed, I would remind you that even at partner level, much of the security associated with larger, more traditional firms is being eroded. The impact of this recession is still being felt large and wide, so there could be greater risks in staying put than in moving.
If you do decide a virtual law firm is for you, make sure you’ve got a financial cushion to see you through the first three or four months while you build up your practice. You will soon feel the benefits from a new, more flexible and enjoyable working existence.”
